Up to 40% Higher Salaries 🙌

🗞️ The Tech Issue | October 30, 2023

☕️ Greetings! It's Monday, October 30th. Welcome to my daily dive into the AI landscape.

♨️ A joint study conducted by the Oxford Internet Institute and the University of Copenhagen disclosed that individuals proficient in artificial intelligence (AI) are positioned to earn 21-40% more than the average, attributing this surge to the blend of AI skills with other high-value competencies. This extensive study encompassing 25,000 professionals underlined the economic merit of a skill is significantly tethered to its 'complementarity'—its synergy with other skills. The blossoming of AI and related technologies notably amplifies the value of certain skills, with machine learning, TensorFlow, and data science being particularly lucrative. This revelation accentuates the necessity for ongoing skill integration in the face of technological advancements, steering the reskilling journeys of individuals and aiding the strategic blueprinting for enterprises and policy architects. Following are the top five skills in the study and their estimated percentage increases:

  1. Machine Learning (+40%)

  2. Tensor Flow[1] (+38%)

  3. Deep Learning (+27%)

  4. Natural Language Processing (+19%)

  5. Data Science (+17%)

🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS

1️⃣ AI pioneer Daphne Koller emphasized the potential of Generative AI, like that in OpenAI's DALL-E and ChatGPT, in advancing oncology. At a Stanford workshop, she detailed how her firm, Insitro, utilizes machine learning to analyze histopathology images for better cancer understanding. By creating "deep fakes" of tissue images, they significantly expanded sample sizes, enabling the discovery of new genetic alterations and potential drug targets in cancer. This innovative approach marries digital biology and AI, marking a stride toward not only unraveling cancer complexities but also impacting other crucial sectors like sustainable agriculture.

2️⃣ Generative AI's rapid evolution is notably marked by ChatGPT's widespread adoption in 2022. The financial sector is unraveling its potential amidst a global technological race, with the East, particularly Singapore, seemingly leading in strategic AI application. Key figures emphasize the imperative of a pre-2020 AI strategy, underscoring Singapore's proactive stance as a significant competitive edge. The anticipation of stringent regulations looms, prompting a call for a clear understanding and strategic approach toward GenAI to navigate forthcoming digital divides. These discussions hint at a paradigm shift, driven by user behavior and nuanced regulatory landscapes, with a firm spotlight on responsible AI utilization.

3️⃣ Generative AI is emerging as a potent low-code/no-code tool, poised to significantly enhance developer productivity once its full potential is unlocked. Despite a promising start, with many exploring platforms like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT, formal adoption faces hurdles. A substantial 46% of survey respondents found ease of use and training to be major challenges. As developers overcome these barriers, generative AI's influence is expected to extend to non-developers, simplifying application creation through intuitive, visual interfaces and automated pre-generation of code, thus accelerating the development process significantly.

4️⃣ The Generative AI sector is on an upward trajectory, propelled by innovations like expansive language models and their versatile applications in industries such as healthcare and finance. Notable trends encompass the expansion of creative AI applications and an enhanced focus on ethical AI development. Prominent contributors like OpenAI and NVIDIA are driving forces in this market. With its capability to transform industries through endeavors ranging from content creation to tailored customer experiences, this sector is slated for remarkable growth, capturing the attention of businesses, investors, and policymakers eager to capitalize on AI's promise.

5️⃣ Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's co-founder, faced investor disdain last year amid a weak earnings report, with accusations of neglecting core business for metaverse fantasies. However, the following year saw a business revival with Q3 revenues of $34.1bn, a 23% yearly increase. Two significant decisions marked his leadership: a swift budget cut post-investor backlash, and embracing generative AI to enhance Meta’s engagement and advertising efficiency. Despite skepticism around Meta’s AI and metaverse ventures, Zuckerberg's strategic moves, like making Llama model open-source, and AI-infused ad technology indicate a methodical, future-focused approach amidst the digital advertising evolution.

🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION

Generative AI's rapid evolution, notably since OpenAI's ChatGPT release, is making significant inroads in commercial and creative arenas. By 2023, an estimated 80 million US internet users will engage with generative AI monthly. Its capability to understand and reproduce human language enhances user interaction, especially in workplaces. The technology's versatility, from automating routine tasks to generating creative content, is being recognized across sectors like marketing, customer service, and even filmmaking. Despite its promise, challenges like erroneous outputs, copyright issues, and potential misuse, especially in disinformation campaigns, necessitate cautious integration and possibly, regulatory oversight.

🗞️ RESOURCES

Prompt engineering, central to the interaction with Large Language Models (LLMs), facilitates achieving specific outcomes without altering the model's parameters. It's about effectively communicating desires to AI through initial text inputs, known as prompts, which guide models like ChatGPT in tasks ranging from question answering to arithmetic reasoning. By refining these prompts, one can enhance the model's output accuracy and relevance. This method not only demystifies the capabilities and limitations of LLMs but also democratizes AI access, allowing individuals to intuitively program computers using simple text, marking a significant stride in the human-AI interaction landscape.

🗞️ WORK

In a podcast with Shane Hastie, Jeremiah Stone, CTO of SnapLogic, discusses his journey from a mathematics and computer science undergrad to becoming a technology enthusiast with a knack for solving complex problems. He emphasizes the importance of building well-rounded teams to tackle technical projects. Stone sees the rise of generative AI tools as a step towards making code creation accessible to individuals with lesser technical skills, rather than a threat to existing developer jobs. He further explains his ongoing research in enhancing large language models for private code-bases and sees a future where locally tuned AI tools aid developers in creating quality code. The discourse also touches on ethical challenges within the tech industry, including wage arbitrage and the rise of a surveillance society, urging for active and thoughtful measures to address these issues.
