Generative AI Transforms Poetry into Music
🗞️ The Tech Issue | October 10, 2023
☕️ Greetings! It's Tuesday, October 10th. Welcome back to my daily dive into the AI landscape.
♨️ Researchers from UC San Diego and IRCAM, Paris developed an algorithm, Music Latent Diffusion Model, to convert "sound poetry" into music, enhancing co-creativity between humans and machines. Debuted at the Improtech 2023 festival in a performance named "Ouch AI," this innovation reflects a broader endeavor, Project REACH, to explore and augment human-machine co-creativity in music, funded by a $2.8 million European Research Council Advanced Grant, and hints at AI's potential to positively intersect with human artistic expression. 🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS
1️⃣ Patricia Gestoso, a seasoned technologist and inclusion strategist, explores the nuanced impacts of AI on workplaces, particularly focusing on gender dynamics. With a rich background in digital transformation and AI, she critically discusses the assumptions behind automation affecting women adversely, and urges a broader analysis. Her forthcoming talk at the Women in Tech Festival aims to demystify AI's effects on employment, offering actionable insights for individuals to leverage AI in their careers, while advocating for a balanced, human-centric approach to AI adoption.
2️⃣ Meta's diving into generative AI for advertisers, launching a toolkit to make life easier for brands. The new features include custom backgrounds for product images, an image expansion tool, and AI-generated text variations for ad copy. It's not as flashy as chatting with virtual celebs, but it's crucial for the folks bringing in the big bucks for Meta. Early tests suggest these tools could save advertisers a month's worth of time annually. Meta's hinting there's more to come, like AI-generated selling points and support for messaging on WhatsApp and Messenger.

3️⃣ Hackathons, synonymous with Silicon Valley's innovative spirit, have regained traction among tech executives, especially with the rise of generative AI. These events are not only crucibles for ideation and problem-solving but also morale boosters for IT personnel. By focusing on generative AI, companies like Skillsoft and Estée Lauder Companies have nurtured a culture of experimentation, fostering continuous learning and cross-departmental collaboration. Beyond unearthing viable AI use cases, hackathons signal a firm's commitment to innovation and adherence to core values, while preparing the workforce for an AI-driven landscape.
4️⃣ The US warns that the EU's proposed AI regulation could favor big tech firms with resources for compliance, disadvantaging smaller ones. The critique, focusing on the European Parliament's version of the AI Act, points out vague terms and a problematic focus on AI model development rather than usage risk. This regulation may deter AI R&D investments in the EU, potentially shifting jobs and investments elsewhere, while also possibly stifling innovation by over-regulating foundational and general-purpose AI technologies.
5️⃣ The swift evolution in Generative AI (GenAI) necessitates that executives transition from perfecting short-term use cases to establishing enduring guiding principles for leveraging this technology. A notable experiment by BCG, with insights from top universities, explored GenAI's application in high-skilled tasks. Findings revealed a "jagged capability frontier" where tasks within GenAI's competence saw enhanced performance, albeit at the cost of idea diversity. Conversely, tasks beyond this frontier saw reduced performance, highlighting the critical balance businesses must maintain while advancing their people, data, and workflow strategies to harness GenAI's potential effectively.
🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION
Generative AI (Gen AI) is spearheading a new era in manufacturing by optimizing maintenance, enhancing efficiency, and innovating product designs amidst challenges like labor shortages and supply chain disruptions. It's instrumental in predictive maintenance, elevating customer service, simplifying document handling, fine-tuning product cataloging, and offering insightful supply chain advisories. Companies like GA Telesis and US Steel are already leveraging Gen AI to redefine their operational paradigms, hinting at a future where such AI applications could be ubiquitous in tackling industry challenges and driving substantial economic advantages.
🗞️ RESOURCES
The surge in open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) on platforms like GitHub reflects a robust fusion of AI and open-source ethos, benefiting developers and the machine learning community. While these LLMs foster innovation, improve edge case performance and bespoke security, their closed-source counterparts, often crafted by major corporations, offer ready-to-use high-quality models with in-built security measures. Techniques like LoRA facilitate fine-tuning on cloud platforms, enhancing language interactions in applications. The selection of models, contingent on specific performance benchmarks and operational costs, alongside future advancements, hints at a transformative trajectory for the developer ecosystem through open-source LLMs.
🗞️ WORK
AI's reshaping of the workforce is a mixed blessing. On one hand, automation could threaten a third of U.S. job hours and necessitate 12 million career shifts by 2030. On the flip side, new roles like "AI trainers" and "algorithm bias auditors" are emerging. McKinsey suggests low-wage roles are more at risk, while other reports show white-collar workers are simply shifting from doing to managing. Upskilling is the word of the day, and AI itself may be the tutor, even individualizing learning experiences.
