Does AI have these 4 Human Attributes?

🗞️ The Tech Issue | October 25, 2023

☕️ Greetings! It's Wednesday, October 25th. Welcome back to my daily dive into the AI landscape.

♨️ The inclination to treat Artificial Intelligence with a human touch stems from a blend of functional needs and emotional responses. This anthropomorphism unfolds through four discernible degrees, each with its unique attributes and implications:

  1. Courtesy: Basic politeness extended to AI, akin to human interaction, sans the emotional depth.

  2. Reinforcement: Users commend the AI for accurate responses, enhancing their interaction satisfaction.

  3. Roleplay: Assigning particular roles to AI, like a personal assistant, making interactions more engaging.

  4. Companionship: Treating AI as an emotional ally, often seen in advanced systems simulating conversational understanding.

These varying degrees of anthropomorphism not only enhance the user experience but also navigate an uncharted territory where official guidelines on AI interaction are sparse. By humanizing these digital interactions, individuals find a way to make the cold, mechanical responses of AI more warm and personal, while also potentially enhancing the utility and accessibility of the technology.

🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS

1️⃣ Canada has surged as a global frontrunner in generative AI, a trend not accidental but the result of decades of strategic investment in research. The nation ranks third in the G7 for funding and fourth globally for the number of generative AI companies. Pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton, Richard Sutton, and Yoshua Bengio laid the groundwork, contributing to technologies like deep learning and transformers. Regulatory consciousness is also prevalent, with Canadian AI experts advising governments globally on responsible AI deployment, thereby positioning Canada as a leader in AI innovation and ethical considerations.

2️⃣ Precision nutrition, fueled by AI and machine learning, is revolutionizing the way we understand and manage lifestyle-induced chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Machine learning algorithms can analyze complex multi-omics data, offering insights into how one's unique genetic makeup interacts with dietary intake. These advancements address challenges in traditional dietary assessment methods, such as self-reporting inaccuracies, by deploying image-recognition AI and wearables. Despite its promise, the sector faces issues like lack of regulation, limited predictive power in algorithms, and the need for standardized biomarkers. The future hinges on rigorous scientific standards and a focus on preventive healthcare.

3️⃣ Google Cloud's recent Generative AI SEA media summit showcased advanced AI solutions, focusing on their transformative impact, especially in retail. Mitesh Agarwal, Google Cloud’s APAC managing director, likened AI to "new electricity," emphasizing the need for cloud infrastructure and data flow. Generative AI is revolutionizing retail by enabling personalized customer experiences and streamlining operational tasks. Unique data sets are Google's differentiator in the AI market, according to Agarwal. Google also introduced Vertex AI Search and Conversation, allowing rapid development of AI-driven digital interfaces.

4️⃣ Generative AI’s environmental ramifications raise concerns. The technology's high energy needs contribute to rising carbon emissions. Experts note that U.S. energy consumption is expected to double or triple in the next few decades, partly due to digital technologies like GenAI. The tech's inefficiency aggravates the environmental issue, especially with rapid hardware turnover, leading to more electronic waste. While companies are largely focused on the technology's potential, ignoring its environmental impact could be a costly oversight. Attention is gradually shifting towards sustainability in GenAI development and deployment.

5️⃣ The proliferation of deepfake videos has surged by 550% since 2019, primarily manifesting as deepfake pornography. A disturbing 98% of all deepfake videos fall under this category, with 99% of the victims being women. The alarming ease and zero cost of creating these videos—requiring just 25 minutes and a single clear face image—exacerbate the issue. South Korean women, notably K-pop idols, are disproportionately targeted due to their global popularity. The study highlights the dual enablers of this trend: advanced generative AI frameworks like GANs and the democratization of deepfake creation tools. This surge calls for urgent ethical discourse.

🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are revolutionizing internet search by providing direct answers rather than a list of URLs. This shift, while promising greater user convenience, also raises questions about information sourcing, accuracy, and copyright. More critically, it poses a significant threat to the $68 billion SEO industry. Traditionally, SEO strategies have been employed to elevate content in search results, driving website traffic and creating an industry of SEO experts. As AI-generated answers make these efforts redundant, the SEO industry faces an uncertain future. Even search engines could see revenue declines, although giants like Google may adapt with new monetization strategies.

🗞️ RESOURCES

Mastering ChatGPT prompts involves understanding and applying key strategies to get desired outputs across various industries. Prompt engineering, optimizing input for better AI-generated output, is now a budding career field. Practicing updated ChatGPT prompting strategies is vital to harness its full potential in projects. A structured approach including project description, ChatGPT’s role, context, output specifications, rules, and examples can aid in producing targeted outputs. Advanced strategies like setting custom instructions, generating prompts through ChatGPT, and reviewing its responses further enhance user interaction with ChatGPT.

🗞️ WORK

The surge in AI use in workplaces globally is reshaping employment dynamics, aiding employers and employees in decision-making and task efficiency. However, it brings about challenges in international HR contexts like algorithmic bias, data protection, and legal compliance across different jurisdictions. As AI's role in recruitment, performance management, and work allocation expands, employers must meticulously navigate these challenges, staying updated on evolving regulatory frameworks, to ensure equitable, lawful AI implementation and mitigate risks such as discrimination, IP infringement, and reputational damage.
