🤖 Conscious AI. Science fiction has often portrayed conscious AI, making it a debated topic. With AI's rapid advancement, the concept is becoming plausible. Recently, 19 experts published a checklist on arXiv to identify AI consciousness. Their framework blends multiple neuroscience-based theories. They believe understanding AI architecture and information flow can reveal consciousness indicators. Despite its comprehensive approach, no current AI, including ChatGPT, is confirmed as conscious. This exploration carries significant ethical implications, emphasizing the importance of understanding and recognizing AI consciousness. Here is the link to the paper.

🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS

1️⃣ An Ontario man named Sam lost $8,000 to a scam where AI mimics the voices of known persons. The scammer, impersonating a friend, claimed he needed bail money after causing an accident while texting. Voice cloning scams are on the rise in Canada and the U.S. The FTC reports $2.6 billion lost to impersonation scams last year. Experts recommend verifying urgent money requests directly with the alleged caller and using a special "code word".

2️⃣ LLMs, or large language models, are undergoing development to enhance their emotional intelligence and inference abilities, moving closer to human-like communication. AI companies aim to make chatbots more autonomous, but this raises concerns about comprehension and safety. Fast Company discussed Microsoft's collaboration with OpenAI, highlighting the development and success of OpenAI models and Microsoft's heavy investment. Microsoft eventually acquired an estimated 49% of OpenAI for $10 billion. Lastly, U.S. courts have resisted copyrighting AI-generated art, stressing human authorship as key for valid copyright claims.

3️⃣ Over the past decade, mentions of AI in U.S. public companies' reports surged from 36 to over 1,000. Touted as the next tech revolution, AI investment and adoption have skyrocketed. While companies such as Nvidia thrive, some signs suggest the boom may be slowing. Companies increasingly integrate AI into operations, from virtual try-ons to fraud detection. However, AI's overuse as a buzzword raises concerns about its genuine application. Potential regulations present risks to companies. The rise of SPACs also highlights the trend of chasing technological fads, prompting caution over AI's current hype.

4️⃣ For the 2023 holiday shopping season, generative AI is set to shape consumer behavior, with 70% of U.S. marketers already employing it. It's generating marketing content, and enhancing virtual/augmented reality experiences with brands like Hugo Boss and Nike leading. Generative AI benefits include tailored content creation, personalized shopping experiences, and educating customers about AI. However, risks include loss of trust from impersonal content or privacy breaches. Generative AI also offers enhanced shopping tools, real-time insights, and improved post-sale experiences, enhancing e-commerce success and customer loyalty.

5️⃣ UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley researchers developed a brain-computer interface allowing a paralyzed woman to communicate via an avatar. The system translates brain signals into synthesized speech and facial expressions at 80 words per minute. Future aims include wireless functionality. Funded by the National Institutes of Health.

🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION

In the Financial Services and Banking sector, there's a surge of interest in Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) for efficiency, personalization, and risk management. However, challenges like regulatory compliance, domain specificity, and job displacement arise. Meanwhile, Llama 2, an improved LLM by Meta AI, offers enhanced performance and commercial licensing. Its flexibility has sparked a range of resources and projects, including integration into everyday mobile devices. Open-source models like Llama encourage innovation in Generative AI, with their performance and licensing impacting adoption.
