AI will take some jobs no human wants
🗞️ The Tech Issue | September 8, 2023
☕️ Happy Friday, September 8th. Welcome back to our daily exploration of the AI landscape. We'll navigate the latest updates, trends, and insights steering the AI and the business world. Let's dive in.
🤖 According to The Register, Forrester's latest report on generative AI's impact on the job market is a wake-up call, especially for white-collar workers. By 2030, generative AI is set to replace 2.4 million US jobs and influence another 11 million. The most vulnerable? Technical writers, social science research assistants, and others in administrative roles. Interestingly, those earning above $90,000 are more at risk than those making less. While generative AI will reshape jobs, it's not the only culprit; other automation forms will also play a significant role.

🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS
1️⃣ Meta has rolled out a new feature allowing users to manage how their personal data is used in training generative AI models. This comes amid growing scrutiny from global data protection agencies. However, the form doesn't cover data from Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Instagram. As AI technology gains momentum, Meta aims to give users more control over their data, but the move also raises questions about the extent of user privacy in the AI training process.
2️⃣ Google Meet is upping its game with new AI features that could revolutionize your meeting experience. Imagine an AI assistant, Duet, jotting down notes and action items in real-time or even "attending" a meeting on your behalf. Late to a call? No worries, Google will provide a mid-meeting summary. While Microsoft and Zoom are also exploring AI-powered meeting tools, the effectiveness of Google's features remains to be seen. These updates aim to make meetings more efficient and could change the way we think about virtual collaboration.
3️⃣ Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist, once questioned the wisdom of releasing flawed chatbots like ChatGPT. Fast forward, and Meta has launched Llama 2, a large language model that's free for commercial and research use. LeCun sees this as a democratizing move, arguing that widespread access can improve the technology and prevent it from being monopolized by a Silicon Valley elite. Despite concerns about AI risks, LeCun dismisses apocalyptic fears, calling them "preposterous."
4️⃣ Navigating the quirks of Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-4 is like learning to tango with a robot—awkward but fascinating. The article argues that we need to embrace the "weirdness" of AI to unlock its full potential, rather than trying to fit it into traditional software molds. For instance, using AI merely as a thesaurus or grammar checker is like using a smartphone solely as a calculator—woefully underutilizing its capabilities. The real magic happens when we push AI into uncharted territories, from generating stylistic variations of text to simulating reader reactions. So, let's stop trying to "normalize" AI and start dancing to its unique, unpredictable tune.
5️⃣ Spreadsheets are the unsung heroes of data management, and this blog post explores how to supercharge them with Language Learning Models (LLMs). Whether you're dealing with numerical data like revenue figures or textual content like customer reviews, LLMs can automate and refine your data analysis. The post dives into real-world examples, from querying top customers by revenue to semantic search in product listings. It also introduces Neum AI, a platform that can help you build scalable data pipelines for these advanced capabilities.

🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION
Generative AI is revolutionizing email marketing by offering unique, personalized content that stands out in a crowded inbox. According to industry reports, email remains a top marketing channel, but the sheer volume of emails sent daily—347.3 billion worldwide—makes competition fierce. Generative AI algorithms can craft compelling emails, personalize campaigns, and even generate images to boost engagement. It's not just about automating tasks; it's about enhancing your marketing strategies to connect more effectively with your audience.

🗞️ WORK
Generative AI, like ChatGPT, is revolutionizing the software development landscape by boosting developer productivity and automating mundane tasks. However, it's not a silver bullet. Experts from VMware's Tanzu Vanguard community caution that AI can't replace human developers and needs supervision for accuracy and security. While AI can speed up coding, it also introduces risks like bugs and security vulnerabilities. The field is still in its experimental phase, lacking established best practices. Therefore, organizations are advised to start small, test rigorously, and educate their teams on how to interact effectively with AI technologies.
