AI Talent Shortage

🗞️ The Tech Issue | October 13, 2023

☕️ Happy Friday! Welcome back to my daily dive into the AI landscape.

♨️ According to TheNewStack, the AI field is facing a significant gap with only about 150,000 machine learning engineers worldwide amidst a rising demand, especially for large language model (LLM) developers. A potential solution lies in retraining existing software engineers. The journey begins with becoming a 'Prompt Engineer,' focusing on understanding AI model limitations and enhancing interaction through prompt design, which is seen as a short-term fix. While technical skills are crucial, incorporating human-centric skills like empathy and linguistic abilities are equally vital. The ongoing global chip shortage emphasizes the need for efficient computing, urging organizations to optimize LLM training and deployment. With training programs like Activeloop's Gen AI 360, there's a pathway for technologists to transition into this burgeoning field, bridging the AI engineer gap while addressing the evolving challenges in AI development. 🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS

1️⃣ The US Space Force has temporarily halted the use of web-based generative AI tools including large language models due to data security concerns, per a memo. This affects the Guardian Workforce, preventing the use of government data with these tools unless approved. The pause comes despite the acknowledged potential of generative AI to significantly enhance operations. This decision impacts users of platforms like Ask Sage, highlighting a cautious approach towards AI adoption amid cybersecurity and data handling worries.

2️⃣ Google's AI-powered search engine SGE, akin to a web-connected ChatGPT, offers summarized answers but falls short of efficiency and accuracy. Despite its new image and text drafting features, it's overshadowed by ChatGPT's superior capabilities. However, with Google dominating the search market, the phrase "just Google it" remains unrivaled, showcasing users' preference despite SGE's current limitations.

3️⃣ Foundation models like OpenAI's are gaining traction in enterprises, especially for data analytics, offering speedy innovation. Yet, a critical choice looms: owning a private foundation model or leveraging a third-party one. Third-party models shine in quick prototyping with generic tasks but stumble when tailored enterprise knowledge is vital, escalating IP concerns. Private models, while resolving IP issues and offering control, demand hefty investment in AI expertise. An intermediary solution like Numbers Station advocates for private models, offering tailored solutions sans the need for a dedicated AI team, ensuring enterprises don't trade off data privacy and ownership in their quest for AI-empowered innovation.

4️⃣ The essence of the text elucidates the transformative impact of generative AI on how we manage and interpret information. By automating information handling, these AI tools, although convenient, could reshape our cognitive processes and potentially narrow our perspectives. The text hints at a future where personalized AI could either augment our problem-solving skills or leave us in a cognitive bubble, underscored by biases. It suggests fostering AI literacy and building AI tools that propel human autonomy and critical contemplation as proactive steps towards harmonizing our interaction with AI.

5️⃣ In response to concerns of AI scraping their work for training, many writers on AO3 have restricted their pieces to registered users, potentially impacting newer authors by reducing guest traffic. This reaction stemmed from instances where AI tools, notably Sudowrite, generated content reflecting AO3's unique genres, causing a ripple in the fan fiction community. Despite measures advised by AO3 and individual protections, the discourse on AI's ethical boundaries in fan fiction continues, amidst varying levels of concern among writers and readers.
