AI-Resistent Skills

🗞️ The Tech Issue | September 26, 2023

☕️ Greetings! It's Tuesday, September 26th. Welcome back to our daily dive into the AI landscape.

♨️ According to the World Economic Forum, the traditional educational system is ill-suited for an era dominated by AI, which not only exposes the system's flaws but also diminishes its relevance. The emphasis on passive learning through lectures and high-stakes exams fails to prepare students for real-world challenges and the future job market. A shift to a skills-based model is imperative, one that focuses on "how to think" rather than "what to think." This approach utilizes active learning techniques, cultivates AI-resistant "durable skills," and even leverages AI tools for curriculum design and real-time feedback. By adapting to this model, educational institutions can better prepare students to coexist and excel in a world increasingly influenced by AI.

🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS

1️⃣ As AI technologies advance, the battle against disinformation intensifies. A recent TechCrunch Disrupt panel highlighted that 9 in 10 Americans fact-check news, but AI tools are making the spread of false narratives easier and more convincing. Experts from NewsGuard and Adobe addressed the complexity of combating AI-generated disinformation, especially in an election year, stressing that democracy itself could be at stake. While solutions like metadata standards and watermarking are emerging, the efficacy and adoption of these measures remain uncertain as open-source AI tools without safeguards proliferate.

2️⃣ Teachers are cautioning parents and students against using tools such as ChatGPT for completing homework assignments. However, the real challenge for parents goes beyond just academic ethics to broader issues such as data safety, digital citizenship, and exposure to inappropriate content. While AI chatbots are a double-edged sword that can be used for efficient learning and problem-solving, they also pose ethical quandaries and potential pitfalls that need careful navigation. It's crucial for parents to equip their kids with the critical thinking skills necessary for responsible AI use.

3️⃣ Dismissing the potential of generative A.I. in entrepreneurship is naive. Entrepreneurship inherently follows an algorithmic sequence of sense-act-learn, something A.I. excels at. A hypothetical entrepreneurial A.I., "BB-1," could efficiently analyze global needs, develop a minimum viable product, and refine it through A/B testing. While the technology isn't yet fully capable of unsupervised decision-making, it's crucial for entrepreneurs to prepare for a future where A.I. could drive lean startups with minimal human involvement.

4️⃣ OpenAI is significantly expanding ChatGPT's capabilities, adding voice and image-based functionalities to its popular generative AI assistant. This comes amid a high-stakes battle in the AI arena, as Amazon invests $4 billion in OpenAI competitor, Anthropic. The enhanced ChatGPT will allow users to have voice conversations and search using images, backed by OpenAI's new text-to-speech model and Whisper speech recognition system. Spotify joins as a launch partner, offering a voice-translation feature for selected podcasters. These features will be available to Plus and Enterprise subscribers soon, with initial limitations to ChatGPT's mobile apps.

5️⃣ In his keynote at AI Revolution, a16z general partner Martin Casado discusses the evolution and economics of AI. Historically, large corporations have reaped most benefits, leaving startups grappling with variable costs and scalability. However, generative AI is disrupting this landscape by opening up large markets and easing the pressure for "correctness." This new wave of AI is showing promise for startups, offering an economic inflection point that can lead to a massive market shift. Casado’s insights signal that we might be on the verge of seeing a new wave of iconic, AI-native companies.

🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION

Dennis Walsh, Global Co-Head of Quantitative Investment Strategies at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, discusses how generative AI technologies, particularly large language models like ChatGPT, are positively affecting systematic investing. These models help extract nuanced information from unstructured data like earnings calls and financial news. However, Walsh emphasizes that these developments are evolutionary rather than revolutionary, complementing existing data analytics methods. He views AI as a tool that boosts productivity, allowing for faster, more efficient research, and dismisses fears about AI taking jobs.

Getty Images, a leading provider of stock media, has unveiled a new generative AI art tool that they claim is more commercially secure than similar solutions. Powered by an Nvidia AI model, the tool converts text descriptions into images. Customers can use the tool under Getty's royalty-free license, which includes protection against copyright lawsuits. Getty also ensures safeguards against disinformation and stylistic replication of living artists. The launch comes amid ongoing legal and ethical debates around generative AI and content ownership, making Getty's tool a carefully calibrated entry into this controversial arena.

🗞️ RESOURCES

OpenText introduces its generative AI virtual agent, IT Operations Aviator, powered by a private Large Language Model (LLM). Designed for enterprises, Aviator provides contextually relevant responses across multiple functions, learning over time. It's founded on four value pillars: robust Privacy and Security, Enterprise Intelligence for real-time data access, nuanced Access Control to tailor responses based on user roles, and a Ubiquitous Interface to facilitate user engagement across various platforms. The architecture addresses key challenges in data security, privacy, and access control, poised to revolutionize ITSM and ESM solutions.

🗞️ WORK

In a recent discussion, researchers Kweilin Ellingrud and Saurabh Sanghvi shared eye-opening insights from their automation study. Ellingrud found it shocking that workers earning below $38,000 annually are 14 times more likely to switch occupations due to automation compared to higher earners. She had anticipated a more balanced impact. On the other hand, Sanghvi noted that although generative AI increased the automation potential from 21% to 29%, the original 21% figure has had a more significant influence on sectors like fast food. These findings challenge popular beliefs about automation's effects on the job market.

AI TOOLS

🗞️ CHARTS

👀 Econsultancy's annual survey reveals that 75% of marketers are either using or contemplating generative AI applications. McKinsey estimates these technologies could annually contribute between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion to the global economy. The primary applications include customer operations, marketing and sales, software engineering, and R&D. Although generative AI is most commonly used for automating content creation and copywriting, it's also leveraged for SEO and summarizing communications, offering a blend of promise and disruption in the marketing landscape.

👀 As we journey into 2023, machine learning is demonstrating an ever-expanding influence across various industries, from healthcare to finance. Significant advancements in algorithms have made them simpler and more potent, driving not just machine learning but also its subsets like deep learning and generative AI. These technologies, embodied in products like ChatGPT Plus and Google Bard, are transforming content creation and data analysis, even though challenges such as AI's inability to draw hands still persist. Investments in generative AI have surged, marking it as a transformative force for the foreseeable future.
