AI Readiness Index
🗞️ The Tech Issue | November 16, 2023
☕️ Greetings! It's Thursday, November 16th. Welcome to my daily dive into the AI landscape.
♨️ The rapid advancement and widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing business and everyday life. Recent breakthroughs, especially in Generative AI, have heightened focus on AI's transformative potential. Cisco's inaugural AI Readiness Index reveals that 97% of companies feel an increased urgency to deploy AI technologies, mainly driven by top leadership. Despite this enthusiasm, 86% of companies globally aren't fully equipped to utilize AI to its full extent. The Index evaluates AI readiness across six pillars and categorizes companies into four readiness levels, finding only 14% as fully prepared 'Pacesetters'. This assessment is based on a survey of 8,161 senior business leaders from large organizations.

🗞️ LATEST NEWS & TRENDS
1️⃣ Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into our daily lives, driven by continual innovations. In this rapidly evolving landscape, foundation models stand out, offering a new level of AI capability. These models, unlike traditional machine learning tools, are trained with vast, diverse data sets, revolutionizing how AI is developed and applied. Foundation models serve as a base for creating specialized AI systems, offering broad applicability across various industries. Their extensive pre-training and fine-tuning capabilities greatly enhance AI's efficiency and democratization, enabling even those with limited resources to access cutting-edge technologies. This paradigm shift is transforming industries like healthcare, finance, and transportation, and pushing the boundaries of AI's role in our world.
2️⃣ As the 2024 US presidential election approaches, experts warn of a surge in disinformation fueled by generative AI. Technologies like ChatGPT, could enable the creation of convincing fake videos and audio, challenging the distinction between real and fake content. The concern extends to social media, where false information could erode trust in news sources and pressure platforms to counteract this trend. Recent incidents, like fake images of Trump and false reports of Pentagon explosions, illustrate the issue's immediacy. While some companies have guidelines to prevent misuse of AI, the risk remains high, especially with the reduction of tech companies' content moderation efforts. The upcoming election could see a significant impact from AI-generated disinformation.
3️⃣ The competition in software platforms is intensifying, focusing on generative AI features. ServiceNow, a major vendor, has incorporated these features into its Now Platform, providing advanced AI capabilities for enterprise activities. These developments, led by CIO Chris Bedi, could impact third-party developers but are seen as a step forward in enhancing user experience, productivity, and digital transformation. Bedi emphasizes the importance of generative AI in understanding human intent and improving documentation accessibility, without diminishing the role of developers. He suggests using metrics like sentiment, adoption, coverage, and business impact to gauge the success of AI applications.

4️⃣ You.com introduced APIs to enhance large language models (LLMs) like Meta's Llama 2 by providing real-time web access. Priced from $100 monthly, these APIs update LLMs with current internet information, helping answer queries more accurately. Customers like LlamaIndex and Cohere have adopted this service. Unlike standard search APIs, You.com's offer extended web snippets, enabling LLMs to give updated responses. The APIs come in three types: Web search, news, and RAG, each offering unique features. This advancement raises questions about the future of search in generative AI and the potential leveling of the playing field against giants like Bing and Google.

5️⃣ In an interview with AltaML's Co-Founder and CEO, Cory Janssen, he discusses the role of Generative AI in business evolution. He emphasizes the importance of leveraging AI in service of business strategy rather than as a standalone project. Janssen highlights the need to understand AI’s role in optimizing tasks within jobs and its potential impact on productivity and job landscapes. He advises on the careful selection of Gen AI use cases, focusing on enhancing rather than replacing human involvement, and stresses the significance of adopting a broader view of AI/ML technologies.
🗞️ INDUSTRY | FUNCTION
There's a growing fascination with the potential of generative AI technology in the ocean freight industry, which encompasses deep-learning AI models capable of spontaneously generating high-quality content like text, images, and audio. Joel Sellam, CEO of Stargo, envisions generative AI revolutionizing the industry by enhancing vessel arrival predictions, traffic navigation, energy efficiency, and the development of autonomous vessels. Additionally, generative AI could reshape exception management and yield optimization for freight forwarders and shippers. It has the potential to automate communication, offer tailored solutions, and improve profitability through efficient container allocation. This transformation is poised to elevate the ocean freight industry.
🗞️ RESOURCES
In the initial stages of building a successful graph database, like Amazon Neptune, which is a managed graph database service, it's crucial to develop a graph data model that efficiently addresses your data needs. This process is iterative and may be challenging, especially when you're just starting. However, using generative AI and diagram-as-code tools can simplify this initial modeling stage.
Key Points:
Developing a graph data model is essential for the success of your project.
Generative AI can assist in researching and proposing the initial model based on existing corpus data.
The model should capture essential objects, relationships, and be capable of answering questions.
Avoid locking into a specific graph representation (e.g., LPG or RDF) initially to remain flexible.
Use diagram-as-code tools like PlantUML to visualize the model.
Ensure the model integrates well with other data sources in a knowledge graph context.
Think of your knowledge graph as a central meeting place for various data products.
Reshaping the model for better query performance might be necessary.
Consider mapping the initial model to both LPG and RDF representations.
This initial stage sets the foundation for your graph database project. It's essential to adapt and evolve the model as your project progresses and requirements become clearer.
🗞️ WORK
Since the introduction of ChatGPT powered by GPT-3.5, the field of language models has witnessed a remarkable expansion with several significant advancements like LLaMA, Llama 2, PaLM 2, GPT-4, Alpaca, Vicuna-13B, and more. This growth trend is set to continue, highlighting the importance of comprehensive training programs to unlock the full potential of generative AI. Courses like Andrew Ng's "Generative AI for Everyone," Google's "Introduction to LLMs," Databricks' "LLMs Application through Production," Harvard's "Introduction to AI with Python," DeepLearning.AI's "ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers," and Microsoft and LinkedIn's "Career Essentials in Generative AI" offer in-depth knowledge in various aspects of AI. These include practical applications, prompt engineering, AI strategies, and ethical considerations, making them crucial for those looking to excel in this evolving field.
