AI Impact Survey

The latest survey reveals a marked decrease in the expected time to achieving human-level AI performance, with projections shortening by one to five decades compared to last year. It highlights a growing consensus on the imminent automation of various professional tasks and the potential for AI to accomplish feats such as writing bestselling novels or producing hit songs within the near future. Concerns about AI leading to human extinction or causing significant societal disruptions are notably prevalent, with a significant portion of respondents assigning high probabilities to such outcomes. Despite these concerns, there's a call for more research aimed at minimizing AI risks, reflecting a nuanced view among researchers who see both the potential benefits and dangers of advanced AI. The following are the key findings:

  • Expectation Adjustment: Anticipated timelines for achieving human-level AI and full labor automation have been significantly reduced, reflecting a more imminent arrival of sophisticated AI capabilities.

  • Professional Automation: Predictions for the automation of AI researchers and creative tasks, like writing and music production, have moved closer, indicating rapid progress in AI's capabilities.

  • Existential Risks: A considerable fraction of respondents see advanced AI as a potential threat to human existence, with 5% or more likelihood assigned to scenarios involving human extinction.

  • Widespread Concerns: Across eleven different scenarios, a third of participants express substantial concern over the potential impacts of AI within the next 30 years.

  • Mixed Sentiments: There's a complex mixture of optimism and pessimism among respondents, with many acknowledging both the potential positive and negative outcomes of AI development.

  • Research Prioritization: A strong majority advocate for prioritizing research on minimizing AI risks, echoing sentiments from the 2022 survey and showing a consistent demand for safer AI development practices.
